Active IQ, the UK’s leading specialist awarding organisation in the active leisure, learning and wellbeing sector, is helping to drive quality within the industry as well as support the needs of learners through the introduction of its Professional Recognition service.

The service delivers enhanced quality status for non regulated training programmes and can be applied to courses of any length, delivery method and context, as long as they meet Active IQ’s quality guidelines. By using the Active IQ Professional Recognition kitemark, organisations can benefit from increased customer appeal and authentication through the Active IQ brand.

Since Professional Recognition was launched, a growing number of providers have signed up to the service including City of Glasgow College, The Fit Box and The Power Pilates UK Studio. Designed to complement Active IQs accredited qualification offering, Professional Recognition gives organisations the ability to promote their programmes on the Active IQ website and to undergo quality assurance review to ensure programmes continue to meet quality guidelines.

Jenny Patrickson, Managing Director at Active IQ comments: 'Changes to the Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) have inevitably led to some concerns and confusion over the quality of training delivered within the sector so Active IQ has recognised the need to give organisations the opportunity to have their own bespoke CPD training recognised.'

Active IQ Professional Recognition is available in four packages, ranging from Bronze for one training programme to Platinum which covers 10 or more training programmes. For further information, please visit www.activeiq.co.uk

Winning-Mindsets

Do you want to provide your clients with advanced level, tailored fitness programmes and propel yourself to the status of elite trainer? Come along on Thursday 9th April to find out how.

Earlier this year, SkillsActive partner Thomas International Sport launched a new series of masterclasses designed to help sport and fitness professionals to find their ‘winning mindset’ through a deeper understanding of behavioural and emotional traits.

The latest instalment of these interactive evening sessions focuses on psychometrics in the fitness industry and explores how an understanding of behavioural styles can:

  • Enhance goal setting with personal training clients
  • Improve client retention
  • Help create athlete development programmes
  • Develop your ability to manage yourself and your teams
  • Enrich your personal development

This London-based workshop will be hosted by an expert on psychometric assessments and an experienced fitness specialist who will share the successes he’s already achieved with clients and colleagues through using tools that augment existing measures of physical ability with a rigorous evaluation of cognitive characteristics.

Speaker James Hutchison explains: “Psychometrics can really help fitpros to reach their potential and ensure their clients get the best results – not by changing themselves, but by maximising what they already have.”

Delegates will receive a complimentary Personal Profile Analysis (PPA) assessment and full feedback from Thomas and will gain 1 CPD point as the PPA is fully endorsed by SkillsActive.

When working a busy schedule, juggling commitments and giving your all to each client, it is all too easy to push thoughts of your own professional development to one side. However, it is worth thinking about yourself and your development as a practitioner and an individual. This is where CPD training can help by letting you pursue the areas that interest you in more depth, developing your career in the direction you want it to go.

To enhance the integrity of REPs as the touchstone for professionalism within our industry, a CPD audit will be conducted on 31st October 2014, to ascertain the compliance of REPs members with their CPD requirements.

The process for this audit will be as follows:

  • A proportion of members with over two years’ continuous membership will be randomly selected.
  • These members will have their current CPD compliance checked against the agreed criteria.
  • If the member is lacking in CPD points, they will be given six months to make up the missing points.
  • If the member still has not completed their CPD requirement by the end of this six month period, then they will be considered to be in breach of their membership requirements and suspended from the Register.

Through this auditing process, we are keen to enhance and reinforce the integrity and trust that being a member of REPs entails.

We are aware that many of you will have completed CPD already but may not have logged it onto our system. We advise that you complete this activity before the audit period.

Those selected for audit will be contacted in November.

If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. You can contact REPs Compliance and Standards Manager Rob Wilkie directly using This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

*Please note that members associated with the following organisations are exempt from the audit as their CPD is managed independently.

On-line up-skilling units to bring REPs members in-line with the new entry standards are now live via the members’ area of the REPs website – www.exerciseregister.org

Available exclusively to members the five, free, modules will allow current level 2/3 members to adapt their mainstream classes/sessions for occasional clients who fall into one, or more, of the following categories:

• Older adults;
• Ante and post-natal women;
• 14-16 year old teenagers;
• Disabled people;
• Children and vulnerable adults.

Each module will earn REPs members 1 CPD point.

REPs Registrar Jean-Ann Marnoch explains: “During the consultation period for the new National Occupational Standards it became clear that many people who fall into the categories above were regular exercisers and often took part in group classes and regular sessions.

“The new REPs structure reflects this, and requires level 2/3 members to have the necessary skills to adapt sessions for these occasional clients. These up-skilling units will provide this necessary expertise. It’s important to remember though that these units do not qualify a member to take a class specifically for just those from these special populations. That requires the more in-depth qualification leading to a specific category on the Register.”
