Subject to the nature of qualifications held and industry experience instructors with overseas qualifications may be considered for acceptance on to the REPs with Provisional membership status.

Please note, due to the complexities of assessing overseas qualifications processing time may take longer than 28 days.

Provisional status is awarded for a maximum period of 12 months. During this period individuals will be required to prove that their skills meet the nationally agreed standards through one of the following options:

Option 1 – Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) - Successfully complete the relevant assessments for the category of registration. This may involve theory papers and/or a practical assessments, and/or case studies at an Approved Test Centre. An Approved Test Centre will carry out an interview to establish whether you have the knowledge and skills to pass. If yes, you will be able to go straight to assessment without undertaking further learning. If no, you will be advised to take further learning in order to ensure you have the best chance to pass the assessments.

Option 2 – Complete a qualification through an Approved Training Provider that meets current national guidelines

All options are certificated by an awarding body and individuals will need to decide which option is suitable. Selected training providers will work with candidates to identify if there is any additional training required to ensure they have sufficient knowledge and competence to pass.

Each option will incur costs.

All members of the Register, regardless of which pathway you register through, are required to hold a minimum of £5 Million civil liability insurance. Many Chartered Physiotherapists are requesting to be included on the Register based on their physiotherapy training and experience, however, qualification as a physiotherapist does not automatically imply eligibility for the Register.

In order to clarify our position regarding the inclusion of Chartered Physiotherapy members, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists have released a statement to help explain the routes for inclusion on the Register. Click here to view this statement.

The Level 4 Mapping form mentioned in the statement is available here.

If you have any questions about joining REPs as a Chartered Society of Physiotherapy Member please contact us.

The following qualification requirements/profile will need to be met for any member to be awarded the status of Level 4 Specialist Exercise Instructor.

1. Registration status of full Level 3 Exercise Referral Instructor on the Register*. For an explanation click here.

2. 150 hours of relevant professional practice at Level 3 in designing, delivering, monitoring, adapting and tailoring exercise programmes for individuals gained within the previous 2 years and at least 6 months experience since qualification (this should be reflected in the CV and reference letter.)

3. At least one Level 4 REPs recognised qualification

* The only exception to the requirement for Level 3 Exercise Referral is where a member was registered at Level 4 prior to September 2011/where a Level 4 award was achieved prior to September 2011 AND the instructor holds another Level 3 fitness qualification.

Joining Checklist -

To complete your application you will need:

  • Registration Form
  • Industry CV
  • Photocopies of Qualifications - This should include a copy of the required Exercise Referral qualification, additional unit of qualification at Level 3 and your Level 4 unit of qualification. Please do not send us originals as we are unable to return them

  • You are not covered on the REPs insurance until your membership has been verified and confirmed by the REPs team.

Currently potential new members wanting to join the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) need to hold an entry qualification from an awarding organisation such as Active IQ or YMCA Awards etc. All entry qualifications on the REPs framework are underpinned by UK National Occupational Standards (NOS) i.e. “What you have to do in order to do the job”. There are standards in all categories on REPs except for Yoga and Pilates which we hope to develop in the future.

Potential new members wanting to join REPs who have not completed an awarding body qualification i.e. training from a Guru or Yoga school, will need to contact the following organisations directly before joining REPs. These organisations are used by REPs to verify the training undertaken is to REPs standards when not via an awarding organisation:

  • British Wheel of Yoga
  • Independent Yoga Network

Why do we only accept awarding body qualifications?

Where Yoga or Pilates qualifications have been certified via an awarding organisation within the fitness industry, new members can gain direct access via REPs as the following NOS have been covered:

  • A355 – Reflect on and develop own practice in providing exercise and physical activity
  • C22 – Promote health, safety and welfare in active leisure and recreation
  • C316 – Work with clients and help them to adhere to exercise and physical activity
  • D459 – Evaluate exercise and physical activity programmes

If you are looking to work within the fitness industry and study Yoga or Pilates then it is encouraged that you undertake your qualification via an awarding organisation.

REPs will look to review this process in the near future, in the meantime thank you for your patience.

Subject to qualifications held and industry experience instructors with older qualifications may be accepted on to the Register.

Full status will be considered if relevant continuous professional development within the last 5 years can be demonstrated. This can be demonstrated through evidence of recent relevant courses and workshops, or through a CV with an employer reference,
