Fitness SPECTACULAR
At the WELSH INSTITUTE OF SPORT, |
Best wishes to Mary Sheppard who retires from her position as Fitness Wales Director, and congratulations to Debbie Lawrence who will be Mary’s successor. Debbie brings a diverse range of skills and has almost 30 years experience in the fitness industry as: the author of 7 books; consultant for Qualification development for national awarding bodies; a teacher trainer and specialist exercise instructor. Debbie was inspired to follow a career in fitness, after attending her first Jane Fonda style workout in 1980. Her passion for professional practice and education led her to train with the KFA (1984) and the YMCA on one of the first RSA programmes (under the leadership of the late Lesley Mowbray) in 1987. She progressed to working for the YMCA as their Chief Internal Verifier and assisted with the development of CYQ as an awarding body in 1996/7 and continues to work with CYQ as an External Verifier and as a consultant. She is committed to the continued professional development of herself and others. She holds a Masters degree in education and is a qualified counsellor, with an interest in mental health. Her focus is to maintain the strong “person and community focused” approach developed by Mary and provide more CPD opportunities for Fitness Wales members. An initial target is to develop and launch the Level 4 Mental Health programme by August 2010. We look forward to working closely with Debbie and the Fitness Wales team. |

| Public Awareness Material
The new REPs public awareness material is available to our members and the clubs and centres that employ REPs instructors. A number of clubs and centres across Wales have purchased the acrylic plaques that, along with the free card plaques, advertise that REPs registered instructors work within the site. REPs branded leaflets are also available for our members and employers that use REPs members. There are leaflets on how REPs members can help the health sector, the benefits of being a REPs member, and the benefits of employing REPs instructors. Further materials will shortly be available through our website such as business cards and PT Log books. The public need to know there is an assurance mechanism for our industry, and YOU as their exercise professional are in the best position to raise this awareness.

| Advanced Directory
The uptake of our Advanced Directory Listing has been great so far. You can now find hundreds of exercise professionals in Wales who have added their contact details through our website. The Advanced Directory Listing gives you the ability to leave your contact details, a website link, and a personal profile and these are then available for any visitor to our website – this may be an employer looking for an ETM Instructor, a member of the public looking for a Personal Trainer, or a project manager from the Sports Council for Wales (SCW) looking for an Advanced Instructor to deliver an exercise initiative. Due to our agreement with the SCW this is free to all of our Welsh members so please use the following internet address to add your contact details to the Advanced Directory: |
