Qualifications For Entry to REPs

Approved Qualifications
Entry to the Register of Exercise Professionals is by qualification in exercise and fitness., Other industry experience and prior achievement can also be taken into consideration (APE – accreditation of prior experience; APL – accreditation of prior learning; APA – accreditation of prior achievement). Some members may be given provisional entry, and this is explained in more detail under the section on this website titled What is my Status? here

Schedule of approved qualifications for full member status on the Register
The Register of Exercise Professionals is unlike many other registers because it has three operating levels of entry (and a new fourth level will be available later in 2007). The Register does not set the technical criteria for what constitutes a qualification - these are based on the National Occupational Standards that are developed under the auspices of SkillsActive. In the UK, a qualification is certified by an awarding body (City and Guilds, CYQ, EdExcel, OCR, Active IQ or SQA and later in 2007 VTCT) through either an N/SVQ (National/Scottish Vocational Qualifications) or an RVQ (Related Vocational Qualification). The qualification will normally be delivered by an approved training provider who are certified by one the above awarding bodies.

Please note that by completing an NQF qualification and/or an approved award which gives a level of entry or an additional category of registration they are worth 20 CPD credit points. Click here more information on the REPs Continuing Professional Development requirements.

The Register also operates a ‘third route of qualification’ which is called an Industry Recognised Award where no awarding body is involved, but there is still a thorough process of external assessment and the outcome for candidates leads to registration.

Full qualifications and units of qualifications
Full qualifications (listed below) give entry to the Register. At levels 2 and 3 there are further units of qualification and these give additional categories of registration. These units can only be delivered by REPs approved training providers. Before starting additional units of qualification it is necessary to hold the main qualification at that level – REPs approved training providers will check that you have the correct pre-requisites before starting additional units. For details of qualifications and units of qualification you can view our qualification and careers structure chart click here
