Its day two of National Apprenticeship Week 2015 and REPs is has some great feedback to share, including the announcement of a brand new entry point to the register.

We spoke to with 17 year old apprentice Spencer Ride, to find out how an apprenticeship has impacted his career and the difference it has made.

Spencer is currently completing an apprenticeship in Level 3 Personal Training with Focus Training, one of SkillsActive’s endorsed Lead Provider’s. The apprenticeship offers Spencer the opportunity to combine learning the trade with studying the qualification.

When asked what he has gained from his apprenticeship, Spencer said, “I’ve now got a much stronger CV with the qualification and experience … I have learnt to deal with the public better in a working gym”

So why do employers offer apprenticeships?

Adrian Lea, Director at Pro Active PT Ltd (with Energie Fitness Wilmslow) fully supports apprenticeships and said:

“I believe heavily in developing people and seeing them achieves goals that improve their livelihood and careers firstly. There is also the financial benefit of the scheme, which includes £1,500 towards the business and keeps payroll down helping the gym commercially”.

Adrian also recommends other organisations to sign up to an apprenticeship scheme and says, “Like Spencer said… just do it!”.

Spencer would like to become a full time PT and progress within his career by completing further training in Nutrition and Physiotherapy. We wish Spencer the best of luck with his training!

As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we are also proud to announce that Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) has introduced a new entry point to the register via apprenticeships. Those undertaking apprenticeships that will lead to gaining a recognised fitness qualification will be granted free of charge membership to the Register of Exercise allowing them to be a part of a 31,000 strong group of health and fitness professionals.

Commenting on this announcement Head of Membership for REPs Greg Small said:

"I am delighted that we are able to support young people coming into our sector. Membership of REPs will give young people the support and networking opportunities needed to develop their skills and continue their professional development throughout their career, not just as an apprentice."

The REPs accredited qualification is a first for the industry and combines two existing certificates

Zumba, the largest dance-fitness company in the world that counts 15 million fans in 180 countries, has teamed up with the Exercise, Movement and Dance (EMD) Academy and Lifetime Training to create and launch the new ‘Zumba® Combo Qualification’.

Developed and delivered exclusively by the EMD Academy and Lifetime Training, the new qualification combines the teaching certificate in Exercise, Movement and Dance (EMD) and the instructor certificate in Exercise to Music (ETM).

The Zumba® Combo is available to members of the Zumba® Instructor Network, known as ZIN™ members, who have already completed their Zumba® B1 training.

Those who complete the Zumba® Combo Qualification will also have access to EMDP benefits, which guarantees free REPs membership and insurance, discounted PPL music license fees and ongoing teacher support.

The course takes four days to complete and will be launched in London on 23-26 June. Nine courses are scheduled across the UK in July, with further dates secured nationwide throughout August - October.

REPs Head of Membership Greg Small said: “This qualification is great news for the exercise industry. It is no secret that Zumba has proved hugely popular, and this qualification will only improve the service and elevate delivery to a higher standard.”

Commenting on the introduction of the new qualification, Dave Sibley, Managing Director of Europe for Zumba®, said: “With our ‘exercise in disguise’ method that is practiced in more than 200,000 locations worldwide, Zumba® has shaken up the fitness industry and given thousands of people the opportunity to make a career out of doing something they love. We know our instructors are passionate about continuing their educational journey to improve their skills and knowledge. This course allows them to do so whilst keeping Zumba® centre-stage.”

Nigel Wallace, Client Services Director for Lifetime Training, said: “The qualification is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to advance their instructor career; we have already experienced fantastic interest, and we are confident that, with our reputation for quality and excellence in teaching delivery, learners will benefit hugely from the new qualification.”

Daran Bennett, CEO of The Exercise, Movement & Dance Partnership (EMDP) said: “This is a significant development for the world of EMD and dance-fitness teacher training in the UK. It demonstrates the high professional standards we encourage across the sector. We are delighted that Zumba® continues to embrace ongoing education and qualifications for its ZIN™ members. It will support and guide further excellent teaching to encourage more movers to the party! An aim EMDP are here to guide and champion. It’s been partnership working at its best.”

Each competition requires the competitors to gather information about their client/s, within an agreed time frame and instruct their session to published criteria. The Level 3 Personal Trainer also requires a progressive plan to be written within timed conditions.

The judges will be observing, amongst many things, the ability of the competitor to relate to their client/s, and the quality of the competitor’s instructional and motivational skills. Plus, they will be judged on their ability to work in a pressurised, time sensitive and professional environment whilst maintaining excellent levels of customer care.

From all at REPs, we’d like to wish everyone taking part the very best of luck.

This category will be available to REPs instructors who have achieved the UK Strength & Conditioning Association UKSCA accreditation, which supports employability via this route.

An instructor will require a prerequisite of the Level 3 Personal Trainer Category on

We will keep you updated and let you know as soon as the New Category is ready for you to sign up for.

The Leicester Kidney Exercise Team have posted a recent vacancy for an Exercise Research Facilitator, to support their research activities into exercise and kidney disease.

This is an interesting position. The research team are open minded about the background and qualifications for this post and I think it might suit someone with exercise or fitness qualifications.

Dr Alice Smith who leads the team said:

"This is an exciting opportunity for someone with knowledge and/or experience of exercise theory and training to join a friendly and enthusiastic multidisciplinary research team. We carry out a variety of research studies to investigate the benefits of exercise for people with kidney disease, and to develop tailored exercise programmes for introduction to the clinical service. The successful applicant will assist the researchers with all aspects of the work, including supervision of exercise programmes, monitoring participant progress, and administration of NHS research studies. This is an interesting and varied role which involves working with healthcare and exercise professionals to improve the health and quality of life of people with kidney disease, kidney transplants and those on dialysis."

The online application system and further particulars can be found here:

The job number MBP00756 needs to be entered into the system to find this particular vacancy.

Two weeks ago a few (female) members of the REPs team began road testing the Shock Absorber Ultimate Run bra, to find out if this product really made a difference to their running experience.

Being regular running club goers, all of the team put their bras fully to the test, with one ‘road tester’ clocking up an impressive 22 miles in just one week!

Here’s a report from one of the ladies Natasha:

The bra was easy to fit, and once on, felt comfortable and supportive.

After just one test run, we all noticed a significant decrease in bounce while running with the Shock Absorber bra.

I think for me, the main thing is feeling confident that I’m taking care of my body and preventing any unnecessary damage to my breasts. I would never wear an uncomfortable pair of trainers, so why should my sports bra be any different?

According to research¹ 44% of women don’t wear a sports bra to exercise at all!

If you don’t wear a sports bra or if you’re looking for more support during exercise, then this exclusive offer for REPs members may be of interest:

Please read our latest update, with an update from REPs Registrar, Jean-Ann Marnoch, on the changes to PPL…

Having come across various Facebook and blog comments regarding recent changes to PPL, I can see the reasons for most of the concerns.

As an Exercise To Music (ETM) teacher for 26 years I understand many of the issues and hope that I’m now in a position to put some clarity around the recent changes.

The PPL tariff in question was introduced over twenty years ago. Over that period, the price has only ever been altered based on inflation, adjusted in line with the Retail Price Index.

In that time, both the way our sector works and the way music is used has changed beyond recognition.

PPL first approached the FIA and REPs to start a review of this tariff in 2008. This came at the same time as the Australian Fitness Industry was facing a costly court battle based on unilateral fee rises which, in the end, resulted in a fee level far in excess of what has been agreed in the UK.

At the time, the FIA together with the working group which included REPs took the view that we would be better served working with PPL than fighting them through the courts; other industries had taken that option and failed.

PPL has a legal right to collect fees which are deemed to fairly value the use of music in public, so they have considerable support.

Working Group

Working with the FIA and the working group (experts drawn from across the sector including REPs, Les Mills, Fitpro and Industry Operators and PPL), REPs helped to conduct an extensive consultation with exercise professionals, both those that work within fitness facilities and in the wider community.

Whilst over 50% of Instructors reported doing more than 200 classes per year, less than 5% of the licences purchased by PPL covered this amount. The current system was not working and needed reform.

82% of professionals solely work at fitness facilities. The reforms to the system mean that their Employer will now be responsible for holding the licence.

68% of respondents, when given the choice, advocated a system whereby operators were responsible for classes in their facilities, and Instructors took responsibility for the classes that they ran at community venues. A further 15% advocated a sole operator responsibility. Exercise professionals were advocating a move to the system, which has now been adopted.

80% suggested that the ‘per class’ model should be the basis of the licence, with 70% arguing that this model  was the single most suitable determinant to base the fee, which in fact it has become.

Ultimately, whilst no-one ever welcomes an increase in fees, it is important that this agreement is viewed in the context of much larger increases in fees across other sectors (such as; retail, pubs and nightclubs), and in particular, the costly challenge faced by the Australian Fitness Industry to counter a unilateral increase in fees by the

Yesterday (Monday 1st October, 2012) Jean-Ann Marnoch, Registrar for REPs, attended the YMCA Building Brighter Futures event at the Paramount, Centre Point, London.

Below, Jean-Ann gives a nice round-up of the night:

"The event was a fantastic opportunity to find out more about how the world’s first YMCA programme has transformed young lives for the better by increasing sport, fitness, children’s play and youth work opportunities throughout local communities.  It was also attended by several celebrity guests including; Team GB Olympians Greg Rutherford, Christine Ohuruogu, Zoe Smith, Daniel Purvis and Mike Hanney."

Jean-Ann spent time with each Olympian, discussing the value of the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs). She even discovered that Christine Ohuruogu’s brother is about to qualify as a Personal Trainer.

Mike Hanney, Team GB Paralympian and has agreed to write a piece for the REPs journal based on his experiences as a REPs Personal Trainer… keep an eye out for this in the next Journal edition!

The Nordic Walking Conference (28th & 29th September 2012) proved a successful event for the REPs team, offering attendees the chance to explore the benefits of walking, gain latest industry news and understand new approaches health and fitness.

Set at the Heart of England Events Centre near Coventry, both days offered individuals plenty of networking opportunity as well as the chance to attend practical and seminar-based sessions.

Keynote speakers included Robin Gargrave, Bob Laventure from British Heart Foundation and Dr John Searle OBE, who gave an insightful presentation on Exercise and the Management of Obesity and its effect on healthcare in the UK.  John’s seminar offered a ‘common sense’ approach for those looking to adopt a more healthy and active lifestyle.

Several industry delegates visited the REPs stand to discuss how they could join the Register and benefits of association.

Nordic Walking has recently become an endorsed qualification on the Register of Exercise Professionals and will allow qualified walkers the ability to join the Register.

We are extremely pleased to have this new category on the Register and encourage instructors join!
