REPs in Wales

Wales was the first country to appoint its own specific Officer. This appointment was made on the back of an agreement with the Welsh Assembly Government that was brokered by SkillsActive, the Sector Skills Council for Active Leisure and Learning.

Appointed in January 2006, John Byers operates as the Register Manager for Wales. John primarily leads the development of REPs within Wales. This includes promotion and advocacy to both employers and training providers and ensuring that appropriate resources are available (including those through the medium of the Welsh language). The role is fundamental in raising the standards of service that the Welsh public are receiving from their exercise professionals.

Since its inception in 2005 REPs has grown in strength across Wales, and is currently in the process of delivering a programme of work that is supported by the Sports Council for Wales. As a result of an increase in profile, the number of registered instructors operating within Wales has risen significantly since 2005. Wales also has the highest percentage of level 3 members across the 12 UK regions. These highly skilled exercise professionals will play a key role in addressing the ambitious targets that have been set within the Welsh Assembly Government’s ‘Climbing Higher’ Strategy for Sport and Physical Activity.

As a result of the continued support provided by the Sports Council for Wales, REPs members who reside in Wales receive extra benefits such as the opportunity to attend an annual convention, Welsh specific communication, and free entrance onto the Advanced Directory. Only registered REPs instructors are eligible to work on Welsh Assembly Government and Sports Council for Wales funded schemes such as the National Exercise Referral Scheme and applications for Exercise Initiative Grants.

Free Advanced Directory Listing for Wales Based Instructors
Our programme of work with the Sports Council Wales allows Welsh based instructors to gain free entry onto the new advanced directory search listing. The REPs advanced directory allows browsers to search for REPs members by qualification, location, name or registration number. The Advanced Directory Listing also allows you to post a short profile and contact details (telephone, email and website) so clients may contact you directly if they require your support. This is especially beneficial for group exercise teachers, personal trainers and those with higher qualifications.
